Training & Education

Ranjit Thaliwal remains a Visiting Lecturer at the DeMontfort University at the present time. He is also a Lecturer at the Charles Freer School of Nursing in respect of the Mental Health Module for year 1, 2 and 3 Nursing Staff Students.

He has previously published articles in the Mind Legal Newsletter, the Journal for Mental Health Review Tribunal members. He also had a chapter published in New Ways of Working in Mental Health edited by J. Dooher, 2007.

The issue of raising mental health awareness is important to us as a firm and articles have been published in The Sikh Times as well as fundraising events for Mind and marking World Mental Health Day on an ongoing basis.

Previous Teaching Projects

We have had the opportunity of completing bespoke training for the psychiatric and clinical teams at Reaside Regional Secure Unit Birmingham.

We have made presentations to the Approved Social Work Team at Rampton Special Hospital Nottinghamshire, and to Advocacy and Support Groups both in Leicestershire and beyond.

We hosted a major training event in Leicester on the 19th October 2007 in association with Cambian Healthcare. We had a large selection of delegates attending including those from Mental Health Act Offices in Leicestershire and beyond. ASW team members; Advocacy Groups including Lamp, Akwaaba; Speaking-Up. There were also representatives from the Legal Services Commission and new Mental Health Tribunal Headquarters to be based in Leicester. The event itself was very positive; the feedback we received was helpful.

The firm is particularly sensitive and responsive to diverse needs including language issues within the firm. This is supported by our short-listing for the Law Society Excellence Award in the category Diversity and Equality: we were the only firm short-listed for such an award in the Midlands area dealing with Mental Health.
